Women Leading Together - Helping Women Create Fulfilling Careers
Volume III Issue 5 • May 26, 2015

Note from Susan

Since starting this business I’ve seen a lot of women make a lot of progress in their careers. Sometimes it just takes a new perspective, a new skill and a course or coach to help them make a few changes.

That’s what happened for the woman I write about in this month’s feature article. She was a textbook case of how you can change your career path by learning a few new strategies. She implemented the strategies I teach in Creating Your Career Opportunities™, a small group virtual coaching program.

When I saw her recently she was beaming and told me “I feel like a different person”. When my clients are successful and feeling fulfilled in their careers I get energized. My desire for you is that you, too, beam with a sense of fulfillment.

Warm Regards,

Susan

Feature Article

“I Feel Like A New Person”

Eighteen months ago Julie (not her real name) enrolled in one of our programs. She was weary. She had been in the same job for 7 years and had tried 12 different times to find a new role. She wanted to do something different for a change but she had become an “expert” in her area and her boss had no interest in her leaving. Julie knew she had skills that would apply elsewhere but just wasn’t able to get the support she needed to get into a new job in her company.

On her 13th try for a new job, she succeeded. When I checked in with her recently, Julie told me, “I feel like a new person. I feel so confident now!”

I asked Julie what made the difference the 13th time (although I had a pretty good sense of the answer). “I did everything you taught me!” As a career coach, I can tell you it doesn’t get much better than to hear a client say that. Julie had put into action the skills and strategies she had learned. Here’s what she did:

Strategically seek support: Julie quit listening to the detractors and very strategically and intentionally branched out (using the model she learned) to develop advocates that could help her make her career shift.

Use powerful language: Julie had learned how to talk comfortably about her accomplishments. She also knew how to stop dismissing herself and started talking about her strengths and skills.

Know where you add value: When you know where you add the most value in business, you can then talk about it relative to what the business needs. Julie used this skill to communicate how her previous experience would relate to the requirements of the new job.

Julie has been in her new role for a year now and is doing well. She feels energized learning a new business, validated that her skills were transferable and supported by the people around her.

Julie was incredibly persistent, one of her strengths. But trying harder is not always the answer. Sometimes you have to step back long enough to develop a new skill or strategy.
